What is a REBORNand NEWBORN?
A reborn is a very special collectible doll. Through the reborn process, a high quality play doll is transformed from a play doll into a truly collectible work of art that is amazingly lifelike.
Over a period of time I use different techniques to bring about the desired features and appearance. Of each reborn to bring about their individual life likeness, No two reborn dolls are ever alike, and it takes many hours of individual attention to end up with your finished baby.
As an artist I prefer to do more newborn babies.
The difference between the two -
Reborn is where you take an existing doll and dismantle it removing the hair, the factory paint, the eyes and then starting the process of recreating it.
With a newborn - the doll begins as a completely blank slate. You usually have a head, arms and legs - with no body, eyes, hair or paint. There are some truly amazing sculptors who create these 'kits' for the reborn artists to do their magic. Then the fun begins as you transform some orange vinyl pieces, into a lifelike baby

I use pictures of my children and grandchildren for inspiration and colouring. Each baby created is unique. Some of the many steps I take in creating a life-like reborn are:
Washing all the pieces in a gentle baby soap to remove any factory impurities that might interfere with painting
I paint the doll with many thin layers using Genesis Heat Set Paints - these are non-toxic and heat set to last forever. Different techniques are used to shade, create mottling, undertones and veining in the doll including hands and feet.

Eyes are chosen if the doll is awake. The nose may be shaded or hand sculpted open and backed with felt for added depth and realism
The hair directionally rooted and ultra micro-rooted by hand, strand by strand using premium angora mohair – these processes can take up to 2 weeks to complete. It is an extremely slow process but the results are well worth it.

New to the industry is a painted hair effect, mixed with rooting this can give a special realistic effect.

Eyelashes on a sleeping baby (eyes closed) these can be created in 2 ways-
A premium angora mohair or if you wish the more personal touch can use your own hair rooted into your baby’s eyes. Both methods are also hand rooted and then sealed on the inside
Eyebrows these are hand painted with a 3d effect

A new body is used; the head and body are weighted to around 5-6lbs with high virgin fibre and fine glass beads in a secure bag so that when you are holding the baby, it has the weight and feel of a real baby.
Magnetic Hair bows & Dummies are also added to give a realistic touch.

A special outfit is then chosen along with a name for the new baby, along with a certificate of authenticity and care instructions
It is my sincere hope that you find this site interesting and please go and visit the gallery to see some finished 'babies'
